Sometimes life has an unusual way of working. And so it is with the genesis of this blog.
You see two things in my life collided today with great results. The first thing was facilitating a leadership development session with a lovely bunch of people (part of which is to learn the skill of coaching). The second thing is wanting to get started on blogging and vlogging again.
As part of learning about coaching, we practice a coaching circle where each person contributes a question as we progress around the circle. It’s a technique that forces people to coach “in the moment” and follow the energy of the coachee. It is challenging because you can’t plan your question in advance and need to be completely attentive to the moment. Out of all the ways of helping people learn how to coach, it’s the most effective I know.
Just in case no one had a dilemma, I chose one for myself - that I wanted to start blogging and vlogging but hadn’t managed to make a start. As luck would have it, no one could offer a dilemma so I got the benefit of 15 wonderfully clever brains helping me get started on blogging, and this blog is the result. (In fact I’m writing this at the lunch break of the leadership development).
Being a leadership trainer I’m often reminding myself to eat my own dog food. It’s very easy to fall into the trap of “do as I say and not as I do”. Recently when I’ve been facilitating leadership development I make a point of setting my own goals as we go through the programme. It gives me a sense of the experience for participants, and helps me to hold myself accountable just as I do for them.
And so it is today. I have set myself a SMART goal during the coaching circle - to write three blogs and do one vlog in the next two weeks. Once they are done I’m going to ask for advice on how they can be improved from a friend in this space. And then I’m going to reward myself with a float tank, wonderful!
This is the adult learning cycle in action - Learn - Plan - Do - Reflect. It’s a great opportunity for me to role model this to the current cohort going through leadership development. And I’m excited to have a bunch of wonderful people cheering me on and holding me accountable.
This is blog number one, you can expect two more and a vlog from me in the next little while. Maybe it will be about how Tiger Woods winning his latest golf tournament links to leadership, why the fact my daughter thinks she is a weirdo is relevant to you, or maybe more musing on how Leadership is like Sex (now that was an interesting blog….check it out here).
See you soon!
